Isle of Grain Power Station: National Grid

Phase 3 Constant Emission Monitoring (CEM) Upgrade.

The liquid natural gas (LNG) vaporisers at Grain LNG Phase 3 facility take LNG and convert it to gas at ambient temperature.

The emissions from this process are released into the atmosphere from the four stacks currently in service.

The expansion of Phase 3 will result in an additional two stacks being installed.

This will enable the new CEMS package to monitor all six of the stacks using one analyser.

The CEMS package was designed by SICK, who also provided all of the equipment.

G&M Mechanical & Electrical Services Ltd were responsible for the EC&I installation, design of the stack and kiosk containment systems, installation of additional earthing arrangements and the disposal of the redundant CEMS equipment from the existing four stacks.

Here are photos of the Synchronous Compensator Containment project at the Isle of Grain Power Station. We installed over 100M of 600mm ladder rack from the old power station, eastern cable way, to the new Synchronous Compensator switch rooms. After which, we installed the LV supplies and data cabling.

Heat Transfer Pipe Installation

Isle of Grain Power Station

National Grid

Project Overview

Excess hot water from the boilers at the 3 new Grain gas fired units is to be pumped 1.5KM to the National Grid Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), Isle of Grain importation site.

At the moment, LNG is delivered to site at -164 degrees Celsius, it is then pumped to Phase 1 (4 vaporiser units) & Phase 2 (6 vaporiser units) where it is heated up (a process afforded by burning of the product). It is then odourised and sold to the consumer.

It is proposed that under the new scheme the hot water from the Grain gas-fired boilers will supply the energy required to heat the LNG.

The demineralised water will then be held in two separate holding Ponds (1on Phase 1 and 1 on Phase 2). Until such time, it will be pumped back to the boilers at Grain.

The scope of work included:

• Above and below ground earthing.

• Design and Installation of over 2.5Km of cable containment, brackets and supports.

• Installation of LV /HV & instrument cables for the project.

• Installation of Power and DCS Modules.

• Lighting.

• Hazardous area work & provision of inspection documents.

• Installation of data and metering equipment.

Cooling Fan Upgrade

Enfield Power station

E.ON

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Installation of 25 variable speed drives into a new GRP Module located at ground level in order to provide better efficiency and control over the water-cooled turbine.

The scope of supply included the disconnection of existing cables plus the supply, installation and test of the following on a per-fan basis:

1. The design of the new ground floor VSD cabin as VSD units could not be mounted in cooling fan cells as originally planned. A situation identified by our site manager. Supply/installation of VSD support frame and VSD installation cable containment design.

2. Disconnection of existing power and earth cables.

3. Reconnection existing power and earth cables.

4. Supply, install and test the new power, earth and motor PTC cables.

5. Supply, install and test the new control cables.

6. Supply, install and test motor heater cables and associated junction box.

7. Supply and install additional tray work from ground level to fan deck as required.

8.  Provision of As built drawings.

Cryogenic Articulated Arm Modification

Isle of Grain Power Station

National Grid

Project overview

Removal, modification & replacement of Cryogenic pipe work lifting arms on LNG Jetty 8 & 10.

On the Isle of Grain, Medway - 10 lifting arms in total.

In 2010, National Grid identified a problem with the lifting arms that are attached to the LNG ships

that deliver gas to site. If the ships became detached from the lifting arm during the

pumping cycle, the lifting arm attachment would detach itself from the ship, leaving the

product to be pumped into the atmosphere.

A modification was designed that would reduce the risk of the operation. G&M were

contracted to carry out the work, the scope of which was:

1. Removal of the lifting arm using crane barges.

2. Transportation of the arm to the Main site for modification.

3. Arm replacement.

This operation had not been carried out anywhere else. G&M’s expertise and innovation has

been used to help other sites perform this project.

EoN-Anlagen Isle of Grain Integration Project

Project Overview

E.ON has built a 1,275MW gas-fired,  combined heat and power (CHP) station on the Isle of Grain in Kent, UK.

The £500m station has three combined-cycle units that burn natural gas and supply waste heat in the form of hot water to the nearby liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal.

G&M Services brought their site experience into action for EoN, dealing with the strategic siting of a generator, and its associated control building, with their mobile crane and experienced crew.

Art Biosphere Contract for Thames Sculpture Installation

Project Overview

World-famous underwater sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor created four nodding horse sculptures.

These were commisioned for a submerged installation in the Thames opposite the Houses of Parliament by Art Biosphere Ltd.

G&M Services were chosen for the project by Art Biosphere Ltd due to their specialist plant equipment and expertise in marine handling. G&M Services transported the sculptures by barge, craned and manoevoured them into position with the assistance of their team of experienced divers.

Warwick Sleeper Cabin Project – during COVID

Project Overview

G&M installed 66 deluxe single sleeper cabins in Warwick, with G&M being responsible for all electrical, mechanical & civil works.

• These cabins were for essential staff remaining on site during the first Covid lock down. Ensuring that electricity and gas networks could remain functional throughout the crisis.

• The pods were installed in 2 separate sections of the site, so that essential staff could be segregated, avoiding a cross contamination if Covid was discovered.

• Due to the importance of the delivery time for this contract, our operations and site managers remained on site throughout the five-week duration of the contract. Their experience helped with decisions, fulfilling contract obligations on time, on budget and executed safely.

SECTION ONE INSTALLATION

CIVIL ENGINEERING:- Vacuum excavation of trenches, plinth installation & ductwork. Install a road barrier & handrail for additional protection of the new Distribution Fuse Board.

ELECTRICAL SERVICE:- Installation of new cable IP65 36-way DB mounted on the plinth. Install  sleeper pods & communal facilities. Test & Certificate all to BS7671 standard.

WATER SUPPLY:- Install a new main from boiler room to utilities plinth with isolation points. Install to each accommodation pod with an isolating valve. Each pod having local isolation. Chlorination & certification of water supply on completion.

SECTION TWO INSTALLATION

ELECTRICAL SERVICE:- Install a 6-way TPN Panel Board via a new cable containment system, on the underside of the foot bridge & five sub-mains to local DB’s to supply 41 pods.

Test & Certificate all to BS7671 standard on completion.

WATER SUPPLY:- Install a water supply to each pod with an isolating valve.
